Facelift Procedure Steps
- Anesthesia
The procedure begins with anesthesia for comfort. Options include general anesthesia (fully asleep), intravenous sedation, or local anesthesia with oral sedation. Your surgeon will recommend the best choice for you based on your health and the planned extent of surgery.
- Incision Placement
The surgeon makes incisions, typically starting in the hairline at the temples, continuing around the ear, and ending in the lower scalp. For a neck lift, an additional incision may be made under the chin.
Incisions are designed to be hidden in natural skin creases or the hairline for minimal visible scarring.
- Lifting and Tightening
The skin is gently lifted. Underlying tissues and muscles (like the SMAS and platysma) are tightened and repositioned for a more youthful contour.
Excess fat may be sculpted or redistributed, and extra skin is trimmed away.
- Closing the Incisions
The skin is redraped over the new contours, and incisions are closed with fine sutures or skin adhesives.
Dressings and sometimes drainage tubes are applied to control swelling and fluid build-up.
- Immediate Recovery
After surgery (which usually takes 3–6 hours), you’ll be monitored as the anesthesia wears off. Many patients can go home the same day, but some may stay overnight for observation.
Facelift Recovery Timeline
Day of Surgery to First Week
Swelling and bruising peak in the first 3–4 days.
You’ll have dressings and possibly drainage tubes, which are usually removed within a few days.
Pain is generally mild to moderate and managed with prescribed medications.
Rest, keep your head elevated, and avoid strenuous activities.
Week 2
Swelling and bruising start to subside significantly.
Most patients feel comfortable returning to light work and social activities; makeup can help cover any residual bruising.
Stitches are typically removed by the end of the second week.
Weeks 3–4
The face looks more natural as swelling continues to decrease.
Light exercise (like walking or yoga) can usually be resumed.
Scars may be pink but will start to fade.
1–3 Months
Most swelling and tightness resolve; your face regains its usual contour.
Final results become more apparent, but minor swelling may persist, especially in the mornings.
3–6 Months
Scars mature and fade further; the full effect of the facelift is visible.
Continue sun protection to prevent scar darkening.
