Recovery After Colonoscopy With Polypectomy in Cameroon
For an uncomplicated colonoscopy with small polyp removal, most patients can return to light daily activities within 1–2 days. Mild bloating, gas, or abdominal discomfort may last for a day or two.
If sedation is used, patients may need to rest for the remainder of the day and avoid driving or activities requiring full concentration for about 24 hours.
Larger or More Complex Polyps
Recovery can take longer when a large, flat, or difficult polyp is removed. The treated area may take around up to two weeks to heal, and doctors may recommend avoiding heavy lifting or strenuous exercise during this period.
Factors That Affect Recovery
1. Size and number of polyps
Removing several or larger polyps can increase healing time and the risk of delayed bleeding.
2. Type of polypectomy
Simple removal of a small polyp usually has a faster recovery than a more extensive endoscopic resection.
3. Bleeding
Small amounts of blood can occur after removal. Significant or delayed bleeding can require additional treatment and may extend recovery.
4. Patient's overall health
Age, diabetes, blood-thinning medicines, bleeding disorders, and other medical conditions can affect recovery.
5. Sedation or anesthesia
Sedation can cause temporary drowsiness and may affect normal activities for the rest of the day.
6. Post-procedure care
Following the doctor's advice about food, medicines, activity, and follow-up can support recovery.
7. Hospital and follow-up facilities
Patients should have access to medical care after discharge, particularly if they are traveling within or outside Cameroon.
When to Seek Medical Care
Contact the hospital urgently if there is heavy or increasing rectal bleeding, blood clots, severe or worsening abdominal pain, fever, dizziness, or fainting. Delayed bleeding can occur for several days and sometimes up to about two weeks after polyp removal.
Overall
For a straightforward procedure, recovery is usually quick, with normal light activities within a day or two. Larger polyps, extensive removal, medical conditions, bleeding, or complications can make recovery longer. The treating doctor should give the patient specific activity and travel instructions based on the size and type of polyp removed.
