Hospital Stay After ICD Implantation in Cyprus
After implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) implantation in Cyprus, some patients may go home on the same day, while others need to stay in the hospital overnight or longer. The decision depends on the patient's health, the type of procedure, and whether any complications occur.
Overnight monitoring is common, especially after a first-time ICD implantation. The treating cardiologist decides when discharge is safe.
1. Same-Day Discharge
Some patients may leave the hospital on the day of the procedure if they meet the hospital's safety criteria.
- Stable condition: Blood pressure, heart rate, and breathing remain stable.
- Successful procedure: The device works correctly, and there are no immediate complications.
- Wound assessment: The incision shows no concerning bleeding or swelling.
- Safe recovery: The patient feels well enough to leave and has suitable support at home.
Same-day discharge is not suitable for every patient. Hospital practices may also differ between cardiac centres in Cyprus.
2. Overnight Hospital Monitoring
Doctors may recommend an overnight stay to monitor the patient's heart rhythm, vital signs, incision, and device function.
Overnight monitoring is more likely if the patient:
- Has other serious heart conditions or medical problems.
- Experiences bleeding, unusual pain, or an abnormal heart rhythm.
- Has a concern about device or lead function.
- Undergoes a complex procedure or needs additional treatment.
- Needs closer observation because of their overall health.
3. Checks Before Discharge
Before sending a patient home, the medical team typically checks that:
- The ICD is working correctly.
- Heart rate and blood pressure are stable.
- There is no significant bleeding or suspected serious complication.
- The patient can move safely and manage their discomfort.
- The patient understands wound care, warning signs, and follow-up arrangements.
4. What Patients Travelling to Cyprus Should Plan For
Patients travelling from another country should ask their chosen hospital about its usual discharge policy, the expected length of stay, and whether the package includes overnight monitoring. They should also arrange transport, suitable accommodation, and follow-up care before travelling.
Same-day discharge can be safe for carefully selected patients after adequate observation. However, patients should not insist on leaving early if their medical team recommends overnight monitoring.
