The hospital's pediatric history began in 1926, thanks to the efforts of the Antioquia Departmental Committee of the Red Cross, which from the outset aimed to serve the city of Medellín's underprivileged child population, as mortality rates were alarming at the time. On October 1, 1952, the history of this hospital began, opening its doors to the poorest classes in the mid-20th century with just 40 beds and some surgical equipment. At the end of 1975, the proposal to transfer it to the state was considered. Thus, in 1981, the Medellín City Council issued an agreement granting the then-mayor of Medellín the authority to acquire the property, which was then named the Medellín Council Children's Hospital.
In 2008, the idea of modernizing the Medellín Concejo Children's Hospital began to be discussed. The decision was made to build a modern, comfortable, well-equipped facility with cutting-edge technology so that children hospitalized at this pediatric center could experience the enormous benefits of a space that met these requirements during diagnosis, treatment, and even convalescence. It was the city councilors themselves who drove the process of modernizing the hospital.
October 13, 2009, marked another milestone in the history of the Concejo de Medellín Children's Hospital. The pediatric care provided there was transferred to the Manrique, San Antonio de Prado, and San Javier hospital units. That same day, at 10:30 a.m., demolition of the old building began.
In December 2009, ESE Metrosalud and Miami Children's Hospital strengthened a bond of international cooperation and knowledge exchange, creating a colorful and harmonious new infrastructure for the care of the city's children.
