In the city of Santiago de Armas, Rionegro, by decree of September 20, 1788, the San Juan de Dios Hospital was founded, with a license issued by Viceroy Espeleta and approved by the members of the Royal Audience.
The hospital was initially built on the site of the Josefina Muñoz Institute today, under the name of the Charity Hospital of the Rionegro District, a name given to this healthcare center. It largely resolved the health problems of the Rionegro residents, who at that time numbered 10,000.
This healthcare center was created to respond to the need for immediate medical care for patients with acute illnesses whose health conditions made it difficult to travel to the Hospital in Ciudad Antioquia, as the journey between the two towns took three to four days.
Around 1963, the General Manager of the Beneficencia de Antioquia officially handed over the new building, but it wasn't until May 26th that the move to the new premises began, beginning work with a surgical table and a surgical unit, in addition to the equipment from the old hospital and eight patients requiring constant medical supervision. On August 13, 1963, the new hospital headquarters was inaugurated, with an attendance of nearly 700 people. A year later, the Rionegro Hospital had the highest hospitalization rate in Colombia, with more than 2,393 admissions per year. In 1968, it became the first Regional Health Center of Antioquia, serving 23 municipalities in Eastern Antioquia with its respective hospitals, health centers, and health posts. It currently continues to provide health services to the different subregions of Eastern Antioquia, the department, and the country.
By Agreement No. 042 of June 9, 1940, it was established that the SAN JUAN DE DIOS HOSPITAL is a non-profit entity of public origin, dedicated to providing health services to the community.
