About Us
The history of medical care and the practice of medicine in Itoupava Rega Central, today Vila Itoupava, began in 1923 with the arrival of the doctor Dr. Alfredo Hoess from Germany, who, at the request of the pharmacist Mr. Max Haufe, set up his office in a renovated stable that was also used for minor surgeries and was located where today is the number one pavilion of the company Haco Etiquetas. At that time, the District had approximately 1,000 residents and was the center of the borders of the municipalities of Jaraguá do Sul, Pomerode, Massaranduba (still belonging to Blumenau), Luis Alves and Gaspar (in the Rio Bonito region). Considering the distances and the time it took to access the only hospital in the region (it is worth mentioning as an example: from Vila Itoupava to the center: 4 hours by cart; from the border with Jaraguá do Sul = 8 hours. From Massaranduba (Guarani Açu) = 12 hours, from Luis Alves = 10 hours, from Gaspar, Pomerode = 8 hours), the following community leaders met: Mr. Max Haufe, Dr. Alfredo Hoess, Mr. Max Wulf, Mr. Carl Bauer and Mr. Frederico Kuelian, with the aim of building a hospital in the region. After several meetings with residents, it was decided to found the Sociedade Beneficência Misericórdia de Vila Itoupava. To raise funds, contribution bonds were issued in the amounts of R$50,000 and R$100,000, which at the time corresponded to the market value of a good dairy cow. Today it is around R$1,000.00.
