Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok County Public Hospital – the current Hetényi Géza Hospital-Dispensary – was built more than 100 years ago and began operating in 1896. Since the start of operations, numerous hospital developments and reconstructions have been carried out. The first developments took place during World War II, then from 1953 to 1955, and in the second half of the 1960s. Although the construction of a new county hospital site in the northern part of the city of Szolnok was proposed in the early 1970s, the idea failed, so a decision was made to develop and reconstruct the existing county hospital in several stages. As a result of the development, by 1975 the hospital – in addition to the reconstruction of the original functions – was expanded with a 268-bed internal medicine pavilion, and then by 1982 a new building was completed, which housed obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, otolaryngology, ophthalmology, central laboratory, and central radiology. In parallel with the construction, the pulmonary hospital, the New Saxony pulmonary sanatorium, and the city's primary care were also integrated into the county hospital.
