The town sits at an altitude of 127 meters and covers an area of approximately 73.5 square kilometers. Its geographical position places it at the intersection of the 47°31′12″N latitude and 22°07′48″E longitude, about 68 km north-northeast of Oradea.

First documented in 1270, Valea lui Mihai has a rich history, having received market rights in the 15th century and experiencing significant development in agriculture, industry, and infrastructure over the centuries.
