Dr Javed M Akhtar

Practising since 1980, with over 45 years of experience in cardiology

• Consultant Cardiologist, Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust (Queen’s Hospital, Romford & King George’s Hospital, Goodmayes) since 2004 

• Clinical Lead for Cardiology, overseeing services for approximately one million patients in East London and Essex (present)

• Established and supervises the Permanent Pacemaker Implantation service at Queen’s Hospital, Romford 

• Established and supervises the Heart Failure service at Queen’s Hospital and the community heart failure service in the Havering Care Commissioning Group

• Honorary Senior Lecturer, St. Barts & Queen Mary University of London (present)

• Conducted research on intravascular volume status during heat stroke while at King Khalid University Hospital, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia

• Led a university team for four years conducting original research on hydration status during heat stroke and how much fluid and how fast it should be given to patients

• Research findings have been published and cited in peer-reviewed journals, influencing changes in clinical practice regarding fluid replacement in heat stroke patients

• Awarded “Best Teacher of the Year” for three consecutive years

Dr. Javed Akhtar is a senior cardiologist with extensive experience in all major fields of cardiology, including interventional procedures. He has been practising since 1980 and has held various leadership roles in both NHS and academic settings.

He is actively involved in education and training, having designed protocols for the management of atrial fibrillation, acute heart failure, syncope, and evidence-based drug use for heart failure.

Dr. Akhtar has been heavily involved in the British Heart Foundation's campaign to raise awareness about coronary artery disease risk factors in Asian communities. He frequently participates in media interviews and has been featured on various Asian TV channels and BBC international radio programs .
