Professor Nick Bellenger is a Consultant Cardiologist with a special interest in advanced cardiac imaging techniques, including cardiac MRI and CT. He graduated with honours from University College and Middlesex School of Medicine, London, in 1994, and completed his BSc in psychology in 1991. He performed his junior doctor training in London teaching hospitals, including intensive care at St Thomas’ Hospital. He spent two years at The National Heart and Lung Institute and Royal Brompton Hospital completing his research MD before completing higher cardiology specialist training in Wessex. In addition, he was awarded and completed the Advanced Interventional Cardiology Fellowship at Southampton. He became a consultant at Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital in 2006 with rare dual sub-specialty accreditation in both interventional cardiology and advanced cardiac MR imaging, in addition to echocardiography, stress echo, transoesophageal echo, pacing, performing an equal contribution to the emergency 24-hour-a-day heart attack coronary angioplasty provision, with an additional extensive research portfolio. Since his appointment at Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital, he has set up a nationally renowned, peer-reviewed cardiac MRI service. This service now performs cardiac MRI for a number of referring hospitals, has an established educational training program, and a research infrastructure that supports MD and PhD students. He has been instrumental in establishing the cardiac CT service in accordance with the NICE guidelines for investigation of chest pain. He continues to practice full-time on the NHS, performing private practice and research in his own time.
