Established in 1938 on the outskirts of Blida, near Algiers, it has long served as a center of mental health care, education, and research in North Africa. The hospital is renowned for its historical significance, pioneering the social therapy movement during the 1950s under the direction of Frantz Fanon—one of the most influential thinkers and psychiatrists of the twentieth century. Fanon's work at Blida-Joinville was foundational for integrating humane therapeutic approaches and advancing anti-colonial theory in psychiatry.
