It was established in July 1951 as Bệnh viện Liên khu Việt Bắc (Viet Bac Regional Hospital) and has since evolved into a major hospital serving the northern mountainous region of Vietnam.
The hospital is classified as a special-grade national hospital, directly under the Ministry of Health, and plays a crucial role in providing medical services to the ethnic minority communities in the northeastern region.
It has a rich history, including being visited by President Ho Chi Minh in 1960, and has been recognized for its contributions to healthcare during significant historical events like the Vietnam War

Thai Nguyen Central General Hospital has actively improved its quality based on international standards. The hospital has implemented quality management systems and has been recognized for its efforts in enhancing patient safety and satisfaction.
The hospital has seen significant improvements in quality after applying 83 quality criteria set by the Ministry of Health, leading to a more than 20% increase in patient numbers
