In 1941, Dr. Gustavo Baz, then Secretary of Health and Welfare, identified the urgent need for a modern hospital in San Luis Potosí. With the support of General Ramón Jiménez Delgado, the state's governor, the expropriation of land from the Garita de Jalisco ejido was arranged for the construction of the hospital.
On April 4, 1942, Dr. Baz laid the foundation stone of the hospital during the Second Cycle of Medical Days. The building was commissioned to architect Enrique del Moral, an expert in hospital construction. Dr. Ignacio Morones Prieto, in his role as president of the Board of Trustees of the Central Hospital, supervised the construction work.
On November 17, 1946, the hospital was officially inaugurated by Dr. Gustavo Baz, representing the President of the Republic, Manuel Ávila Camacho. This event marked the beginning of operations of a teaching hospital that has been instrumental in training generations of healthcare professionals and serving the people of San Luis Potosí.
In 1954, the hospital officially adopted the name “Dr. Ignacio Morones Prieto Central Hospital” in honor of one of its most prominent founders.
