Chainama Hills College Hospital is Zambia’s premier national tertiary psychiatric hospital located in Lusaka. Established in 1955, it has evolved from a colonial-era asylum into a modern mental health institution dedicated to the care, rehabilitation, and reintegration of patients with psychiatric disorders. The hospital spans over 100 hectares and currently has a bed capacity of approximately 210. It offers specialized mental health services including medical treatment, psychotherapy, occupational and recreational therapy, and psychosocial counseling.

As a teaching hospital affiliated with Chainama Hills College of Health Sciences, it plays a critical role in training psychiatric clinical officers, nurses, and other mental health professionals to address the country’s severe shortage of specialized mental health personnel. The hospital works closely with the Ministry of Health, World Health Organization, and various NGOs to advance mental health awareness, reduce stigma, and improve community reintegration practices.
