Cherokee Mental Health Institute (CMHI) is a state-run psychiatric hospital located at 1251 West Cedar Loop, Cherokee, Iowa 51012. Established in 1902, it is operated by the Iowa Department of Health and Human Services. CMHI provides acute inpatient psychiatric treatment for adults, adolescents, and children in need of specialized mental health care, including those ordered by the court for competency restoration or found not guilty by reason of insanity. The facility also houses the Civil Commitment Unit for Sexual Offenders (CCUSO), a secure unit for the treatment of sexually violent predators after their prison terms
