CHL was created by the law of December 10, 1975. It has the status of a public establishment which has financial and administrative autonomy and which is managed by the forms and methods of private law.
The CHL is administered by an Administrative Commission composed of 13 members: 6 State delegates, 3 delegates from the City of Luxembourg, 2 delegates from the Norbert Metz Foundation since the merger with the Eich Clinic (now CHL Eich) and 2 CHL staff delegates.
The Minister of Health exercises supervision in certain areas specified by law.
The CHL is headed by a Director General, assisted by a Medical Director, a Director of Care, and an Administrative and Financial Director. Together, they form the Executive Committee, assisted by a Secretary General.Opened in 1976, after the merger of the newly built Municipal Hospital (now CHL Centre), the Grand Duchess Charlotte Maternity Hospital (now CHL Maternity) dating from 1936, and the Pediatric Clinic (now CHL Kannerklinik) dating from 1966, joined in 2004 by the Eich Clinic (CHL Eich), the CHL today has a capacity of 579 beds and employs 2,111 people active in more than 50 professions. Among them are some 270 doctors and a thousand nursing staff. The CHL is the only hospital center in which physicians work as full-time employees at the hospital. Since its founding, the CHL has been heavily involved in training, teaching, and research activities, missions explicitly entrusted to it by law. Many of the CHL's departments are recognized by universities in neighboring countries as internship and training sites for future physicians, pharmacists, and biologists.
