Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital (formerly Willingdon Hospital) was established in 1932 by the British for their staff with just 54 beds. After independence, it was transferred to the New Delhi Municipal Committee and then to the Central Government in 1954. Today, the hospital is fully funded by the Government of India (Ministry of Health & Family Welfare) and occupies 30 acres in central Delhi. It is a major multi-specialty government hospital catering to the population of New Delhi, Central District, and patients from across India. The hospital is renowned for not refusing emergency patients and for delivering a wide spectrum of medical care, education, and research.
