Elizabeth Blackwell Hospital, named in honor of Dr. Elizabeth Blackwell—the first woman to receive a medical degree in the United States—was founded to provide accessible, high-quality healthcare to underserved women and children. Established in 1857 by Dr. Blackwell, her sister Dr. Emily Blackwell, and Dr. Marie Zakrzewska, it was the first hospital in the U.S. staffed entirely by women physicians. The hospital’s mission included both patient care and the professional development of women in medicine, offering clinical training and opportunities for female doctors and nurses.
