About Us :

Hawaii State Hospital (HSH) is the only publicly funded psychiatric facility in Hawaii, providing specialized inpatient psychiatric services to adults 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Operated under the Department of Health's Adult Mental Health Division, the hospital's mission is to offer safe, integrated, evidence-based psychiatric assessment, treatment, and rehabilitation to individuals primarily court-ordered to its care.

Speciality

Inpatient Psychiatric Care: Offers comprehensive psychiatric assessment, treatment, and rehabilitation services.
Forensic Mental Health Services: Specializes in managing patients committed through the judicial system.
Medical and Behavioral Disorder Treatment: Addresses co-occurring medical and psychiatric conditions.
Psychological Services: Provides individual and group therapy, along with cognitive and behavioral interventions.
Social Services: Assists patients with legal issues, discharge planning, and community reintegration.

$140 Million Forensic Facility Contract: Awarded for the design and construction of a new 144-bed forensic psychiatric facility.
The Joint Commission Accreditation: Received accreditation for maintaining high standards of psychiatric care

The care of patients remains consistently high DESPITE the fact that the legislature refuses to increase funding for more staff, better infrastructure, emergency beepers with GPS, and better paid staff. Attempting to care for very ill patients IN ADDITION to caring for violent patients is a strain. Most states have separate facilities for violent patients who have committed murder and rape. BTW only 3% of mentally ill patients ever commit violence. The recent escape of the patient was a blip and the patient was returned from California without incidence. Let’s not base an assessment on one escape. Instead help by asking the Hawai’i state legislature for more money to help this place. ~Helen Eschenbacher
