The Children's Hospital was founded by the presidential decree of January 10, 1977, which created this institution under the name of the Children's Hospital of the Northwest. The hospital opened its doors to the public on November 4, 1977, with the primary objective of providing care to the child population of northwestern Mexico, as well as training human resources dedicated to pediatrics and initiating scientific research into the medical and social problems inherent to the region.

In June 2004, construction began on what is now the Comprehensive Women's Hospital of the State of Sonora, with the goal of providing improved care to Sonoran women. It was inaugurated on September 6, 2005.
