Hikarigaoka Sperman Hospital was established in 1955 with the aim of opening a hospital for people suffering from tuberculosis. Currently, as a 140-bed general hospital open to the community, we provide medical care mainly in the fields of internal medicine, pediatrics, rheumatology, and palliative care. In particular, we have a history of opening the first palliative care ward (hospice) in the prefecture.
After participating in medical volunteer work after the Great East Japan Earthquake, my interest in community medicine grew, and in 2013 I opened a home care clinic in Tome City, Miyagi Prefecture. Currently, we operate many home care clinics, mainly in the Tohoku region, and work with people working in the medical, nursing, and welfare fields in each region to address the problem of a shortage of doctors and to develop towns.
In the future, we will utilize the multi-disciplinary team approach we have cultivated in running the home clinic in the operation of Hikarigaoka Spellman Hospital, working to promote the creation of a hospital that the local community can rely on and to develop the human resources that will support local medical care in the future.
