Founded by Saint Pio of Pietrelcina (Padre Pio) and inaugurated on May 5, 1956, Casa Alívio do Sofrimento is one of Italy’s most important and advanced hospitals, combining cutting-edge medical care with a strong human and spiritual mission. The hospital is administered by Vatican City and is located on a hilltop in San Giovanni Rotondo, symbolizing a “hospital-town”. It was envisioned by Padre Pio as a true “home for the relief of suffering,” providing not only medical treatment but also holistic care and dignity for the sick, especially the most vulnerable.
