The oldest human remains in the state are approximately 15,000 years old and consist of skull fragments and other remains found on the shores of lakes in the municipalities of Zacoalco de Torres and Chapala. Arrowheads, scrapers, fishhooks, needles, and other bone artifacts have also been found.
Other recovered remains include Pleistocene fauna found in Ameca, Zacoalco de Torres, San Marcos, Sayula, and the shores of Lake Chapala. These findings also include arrowheads, approximately 10,000 years old, found south of Zacoalco de Torres and San Marcos.
Conclusive evidence of human presence is provided by the petroglyphs and cave paintings found in the municipalities of Cabo Corrientes, San Gabriel, Jesús María, La Huerta, Puerto Vallarta, Mixtlán, Villa Purificación, Casimiro Castillo, Zapotlán el Grande and Pihuamo.
There are sufficient elements to assume that the formal appearance of the first human settlements in western Mexico dates back 7,000 years.
For the purposes of study, cultural evolution in this region has been divided into two stages, beginning with the beginning of agriculture and village settlement around 1500 BC.
