Hospital Maternidade Almeida Castro was officially opened on October 16, 1947, with doctors João Marcelino and Maltez Fernandes as its first directors. The institution is currently maintained with funding from Brazil’s public health system (SUS), through agreements made by the Association for Assistance and Protection of Maternity and Childhood of Mossoró (APAMIM), in partnership with the State Government of Rio Grande do Norte and the Municipal Government of Mossoró/RN.
