In 1958, Dr. Edward Lamar Cole , a physician and Baptist missionary to Mexico originally from the United States, traveled to Guadalajara with his wife. His goal was to establish, with the help of the National Baptist Convention, a hospital that would provide comprehensive relief to people, both physically and spiritually.
In order to practice in Mexico, Dr. Cole revalidated his studies at the School of Medicine of the University of Guadalajara , linking him to many of those who would become, over time, his close collaborators as members of the Medical Staff of the new hospital.
In 1955, a large property located along the so-called Old Colomos Road, on the outskirts of the city, was acquired. Construction of the hospital immediately began, with a modern and functional design that would meet the medical needs.
In that same year, the civil society called LOCHONO, SC was legally established , currently known as HOSPITAL MÉXICO AMERICANO, SC, a term proposed by the first letters of three English words “Love, Charity and Honor”.
On February 17, 1958, the Hospital opened its doors, marking a new way of providing hospital services in the western part of the country. It had 42 beds for inpatients, providing the majority of the services it continues to provide to this day. The Hospital's Medical Staff was also formally organized with 14 active members, 16 consulting members, and 33 courtesy members.
Dr. Cole strived from the very beginning to practice modern, specialized, and humane medicine, at the forefront of technology, and with specialized personnel in each new branch of medicine.
