About Us
Hospital Irmandade de São João Batista de Macaé occupies a block in Praça Veríssimo de Melo and has a past with deep roots in the history of the Municipality. It arose from the altruistic spirit of the good Portuguese Antônio Joaquim D'Andrade who, having emigrated to the colony, ended up in the village of São João Batista de Macaé while still young, where he ended up living until the end of his days. Here, when he ran a small couscous business, he received the nickname Casculeiro; he began calling himself Antônio Joaquim D'Andrade Casculeiro without degrading the image of the honorable Portuguese. On November 8, 1862, as he remained single, he had his will drawn up at a notary's office, leaving two thousand réis to be deposited in the Banco do Brasil, to be used to begin the construction of a Charity House, where those in need would be helped.
