About Us

The Charity Hospital is now the only Jewish hospital in Central Europe. Before the Holocaust, there were four Jewish hospitals in Budapest, the largest being the one on Szabolcs Street, built in 1896, which was nationalized in 1948. The hospitals on Maros Street and Városmajor Street were nationalized in 1952. One currently houses a clinic, the other hospital / Bíró Dániel Gyógyintézet / was set on fire by the Arrow Cross on January 17, 1945, and was never reconstructed.

The Charity Hospital was built in 1914, also nationalized in 1952, and today it houses the National Institute of Neurosurgery. The annexes of the Charity Hospital, the Chevra Chadisa asylum and the Institute for the Blind, were built in 1914. The asylum part was not nationalized, but was left to the Jewish community for religious activities and kosher purposes. The Charity Hospital has been operating here ever since. The Institute for the Blind was nationalized, and the Pulmonary and Neurological Department of the Uzsoki Street Hospital operated in the building until the early 1990s. 1993 - based on the law on the return of church property, after more than 40 years of use, the Uzsoki Street Hospital returned it to the denomination.
