About Us

Kaohsiung Medical University (KMU), originally established as Kaohsiung Medical College in 1954 by former Kaohsiung Mayor Chen Chi-chuan and Prof. Tu Tsung-ming (Taiwan’s first Ph.D. in Medical Sciences), is the first private medical institution in southern Taiwan. In 1999, it was renamed Kaohsiung Medical University. KMU has played a pivotal role as a cradle for highly-skilled physicians and medical specialists, and is recognized for its contributions to medical care, education, and research in Taiwan and beyond.

The university is located in the center of Kaohsiung, Taiwan’s second-largest city. KMU operates a network of affiliated hospitals, including the prestigious Chung-Ho Memorial Hospital (the largest medical center in southern Taiwan), and has managed Hsiao-kang Hospital since 1998. KMU is a leader in both basic and clinical medical research, and has a strong international orientation with numerous academic exchange programs and sister school relationships worldwide.
