Karolinska University Hospital and Karolinska Institutet share not only their names but also a long and fascinating history that stretches back to the early 19th century. Since the beginning, the development of the hospital and the institute has been characterized by a strong connection between research, teaching and practical healthcare. Something that has been facilitated by their geographical proximity, first on Kungsholmen and later in Solna and Huddinge.
As early as 1810, the "Institute for the Training of Skilled Field Surgeons" was established based on the need to educate and equip doctors with the skills needed militarily, not least after the wars Sweden had been involved in during the era. In 1817, the name was changed to the Royal Carolinian Medical-Surgical Institute, which would later be simplified to Karolinska Institutet, KI.
From the beginning, the institute had a strong connection between research, teaching and healthcare, and its location opposite the Serafimer Hospital on Kungsholmen enabled a symbiosis between theory and practice. During the 19th century, the institute developed into a leading center for medical education and research in Sweden. It was here that Alfred Nobel had a significant interest and later donated money to establish the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.
