The hospital has its roots dating back to 1878 when the County of Los Angeles opened a 100-bed hospital on Mission Road. It affiliated with the University of Southern California (USC) Medical School in 1885. The current facility was opened in 2010 after the original building was deemed non-compliant with seismic safety codes following the 1994 Northridge earthquake.
LA General provides a full spectrum of emergency, inpatient, and outpatient services, including medical, surgical, emergency/trauma, obstetrical, gynecological, pediatric, and psychiatric services. It is one of the largest providers of healthcare in Los Angeles County and serves as a Level I trauma center
