The Maternidade de Alto Risco de Imperatriz (MARI) is a state-run maternity hospital managed by the Empresa Maranhense de Serviços Hospitalares (EMSERH). It serves as a regional reference center for high-risk pregnancies, providing comprehensive care to pregnant women, postpartum mothers, and newborns from Imperatriz and 42 surrounding municipalities.

In February 2023, MARI was awarded the Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI) certification by the Brazilian Ministry of Health. This recognition affirms MARI's commitment to promoting safe childbirth practices, immediate skin-to-skin contact, and exclusive breastfeeding within the first hour of life .​

MARI is recognized for its multidisciplinary approach and as a Baby-Friendly Hospital (IHAC/IHAB), promoting early skin-to-skin contact and breastfeeding in the first hour of life, although challenges remain in universalizing these practices, especially after cesarean deliveries or in cases of maternal/infant complications. The hospital also participates in research and quality improvement projects related to maternal and perinatal health
