Our hospital was established in 1939 as the Miyagi Sanatorium at the southern end of the Pacific coast of Miyagi Prefecture. In 1970, it was renamed the National Sanatorium Miyagi Hospital, its predecessor, and in 2004, it became the current National Hospital Organization Miyagi Hospital. The National Hospital Organization is a nationwide hospital network consisting of 140 hospitals, and its mission is wide-ranging, including ensuring medical care in the safety net field and in national crisis management, and contributing to regional medical care such as building a regional comprehensive care system. In accordance with this mission, our hospital has been providing "policy medicine" such as the rehabilitation and convalescence of severely mentally and physically disabled children and adults, as well as "policy medicine" for intractable neurological diseases such as Parkinson's disease and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis for many years. We also contribute to "regional medical care" through the opening of a regional comprehensive care ward and the entrustment of a regional comprehensive support center.

Miyagi Hospital also offers advanced medical care. This is MR-guided focused ultrasound (FUS) therapy for drug-resistant essential tremor and Parkinson's disease tremor symptoms. In 2020, our hospital was the first in the Tohoku region to introduce this treatment device. We have already treated over 200 patients, and boast a track record that is among the best in Japan.
