Nirmala Hospital, a pioneer in the field of Medical Care in the Malabar region of Kerala had its humble beginnings in August 1937 with the establishment of a small dispensary at Vellimadukunnu, Calicut, by the great Italian Jesuit missionary Fr. Edward Beretta S.J.

In 1964, Rt. Rev. Dr. Aldo Maria Patroni, the Bishop of Calicut Diocese handed over the administration of Nirmala Hospital to the Congregation of Ursuline Sisters of Mary Immaculate. Mother Stefania Murelli, the then Delegate Superior of the mission accepted the invitation. In 1966, Sr. Dr. Giovanna Alberoni, a doyenne in Health Care Mission, an energised, daring, committed and far-visioned Italian Ursuline Sister Doctor took charge as the first Medical Superintendent and Administrator of Nirmala Hospital. She took the institution to great heights of growth within a period of eight years. She established the Maternity and Child Health Wing, Intensive Care Units, and founded the Nirmala School of Nursing over the years.
