The mission of the local emergency departments is to relieve the burden on hospital emergency departments. We at the local emergency departments can help you with acute illnesses and injuries that are not life-threatening, and when you do not need the larger resources available in hospital emergency departments. 

At the local emergency room you will receive help when you have injured yourself, perhaps broken a leg or need help with a wound. If your child has a stomach ache or difficulty breathing due to a severe cold.

If you suddenly develop swelling in one leg, the emergency room can find out if you may have had a blood clot. If you have hit your head but are awake, you can be examined and allowed to rest for a while under observation. In some cases, the emergency room can also arrange for your head to be examined with a CT scan.

My child and I were visiting Stockholm from Barcelona when she developed symptoms of an ear infection. After reading the reviews and being told by the Airbnb host that the medical system is on the verge of collapse here, I hesitated taking her to the ER but eventually did so because I was worried she wouldn’t be able to fly back due to cabin pressure on the ears. We went at 8am and had to ask around to find the entrance to the ER. When we did, we took a number and waited. There were 15 people in front of us and the wait took about an hour. Then we went in and had our information taken by the nurse and waited some more. The wait inside took longer, about 3 hours. It was obvious that people with more severe issues were seen first. Halfway through, our pain reliever wore off and my child began to experience ear pain and a fever. I asked for some paracetamol for her and they quickly provided some. After 4 hours, we managed to see a doctor and received antibiotics which we had to pick up from a pharmacy about 15 mins walk away. All in all, we had a pretty pleasant experience. The wait is long but that’s normal for any ER in any country. Everyone we met has been helpful and spoke fluent English. They provided the documents I needed for an insurance claim on request. I don’t know why the bad reviews, but besides the wait, which is quite normal, nothing else came across as insufficient to me.

It is very difficult in this moment to get any appointment in any of the vårdcentralen of Haninge Kommun. That is very frustrating and negative. However, I have to say that my experience with the barnmottagning in Haninge has been very very positive. The nurses and doctors are very qualified and experienced. They took care of my little one in the best way thinkable. I am very thankful for the care we have received.
