The Old Hospital de la Santa Creu is one of Barcelona’s most important examples of Catalan civil-Gothic architecture. Founded in 1401 by the Council of One Hundred to merge the city’s six hospitals, it was the main hospital of Barcelona for over five centuries. The complex was designed by Guillem d’Abiell and constructed in phases from 1401 through the 18th century, with major expansions and additions, including the Casa de Convalescència (17th century) and the College of Surgeons (18th century). The hospital closed in 1926, coinciding with the death of Antoni Gaudí, who was one of its last patients. Since then, it has been restored and repurposed as a major cultural and academic center for the city.
