About Us
Founded in 1866 and managed from 1876 to 1943 by Dr. John Harvey Kellogg, the Battle Creek Sanitarium was the world’s premier health resort and hospital, based on the health principles of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. The “San,” as it was affectionately known, was a sprawling complex of more than 30 buildings on 30 acres, accommodating up to 1,300 guests. It became famous for promoting “biologic living,” a holistic approach to health that included exercise, vegetarian diet, hydrotherapy, fresh air, and rest. The institution also housed a hospital, research facilities, a nursing school, and the Sanitarium Food Company. The San attracted both the famous and the general public, becoming a symbol of wellness and preventive medicine in America.
