At the initiative of the Colombian League for the Fight Against Cancer, in 1961, Dr. Raul Villalobos Rojas, Father Emmanuel De Alba, accompanied by a distinguished group of prestigious physicians and prominent civic leaders, motivated by a selfless spirit of service, gathered to organize the League for the Fight Against Cancer in our Department.
What a great success it was for everyone to appoint Don Ramón Garavito Martínez as President and Leader in the founding of the League, because from the very beginning, this illustrious citizen put his excellent relationships with national and international organizations at the service of this noble cause. This is how he obtained stretchers, projectors, teaching materials and two vans from the American Cancer Society in the United States (one of which was donated to the Red Cross). With these elements, the efforts aimed at making the League known through talks and projections in schools and communities began, in order to raise awareness of the need for regular checkups that will allow people to maintain good health, detect cancer early and thus be able to successfully combat it.
Don Ramon Garavito Martínez provided his office space to initiate the League's work. Patients were referred to the offices of friendly doctors. To continue the work inherent to its mission, the League moved to a space on the first floor of the building later purchased by the Social Security Institute in the Los Andes neighborhood. This time, they were forced to move to a space located on Via 40 and Calle 75, donated by Dr. Navas Uribe, Secretary of Health.
