Holy Cross Hospital - Salt Lake has a rich history dating back to 1875 when it was founded by the Sisters of the Holy Cross. Initially established to serve Catholic miners and others in need, the hospital provided care regardless of patients' ability to pay, setting a precedent for compassionate service. Over the years, it expanded significantly, growing from 13 beds to a larger facility by 1883, and became a cornerstone of healthcare in the region. The hospital also played a pivotal role in nursing education by establishing a nursing school in 1901, which graduated over 1,000 nurses during its operation until 1973. Known for its charitable contributions and high-quality medical services, Holy Cross Hospital was operated by the Sisters for over a century. After being sold in 1994 and undergoing several name changes, it was reacquired by CommonSpirit Health in 2023, restoring its original name to honor its heritage. Today, the hospital continues to serve the community with a commitment to delivering high-quality, compassionate care. The historic Holy Cross Chapel, built alongside the hospital in 1904, remains a significant religious and architectural landmark in Salt Lake City.
