The Sinaloa Pediatric Hospital was founded on September 13, 1980, and is the only children's hospital in the state of Sinaloa. Parents of sick children from states such as Sonora, Baja California Sur, Nayarit, and Durango chose it for its quality of medical care and social work. It primarily serves children with very low economic resources who lack any medical services, whether through the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS), the ISSSTE (National Institute of Social Security), or any other type of medical service. It also offers care for all types of childhood illnesses, covering all pediatric specialties. It is currently recognized as a regional referral center for children with cancer and other catastrophic illnesses, with a hospital staff of more than 400 specialist physicians, nurses, residents, radiologists, and chemists.
Each year, more than 90,000 consultations are provided, 3,500 are hospitalized, more than 25,000 subspecialty consultations are provided, 150,000 laboratory tests are performed, 30,000 emergency room visits are performed, 1,763 surgeries are performed, 4,500 vaccines are administered, more than 18,000 cancer treatment sessions are provided, and more than 80 new children with cancer are admitted to the Oncology Department of the Children's Hospital of Sinaloa each year.
Around 500 patients are treated daily in the hospital's various areas. 40% of these patients are from outside the city, meaning they come from nearby places like Mazatlán or El Rosario, as well as from Los Cabos or La Paz. Patients regularly need to come in for medical checkups, and their transportation and stay are complicated in most cases, as the shelters at the Children's Hospital of Sinaloa are at full capacity most of the time.
