State Psychiatric Hospital – Kardzhali was opened on 15.12.1954 by order of the Ministry of Mental Health No. 1706/23.12.1954, initially as a psychoneurological colony. It existed as such for only 15 days. Its task was to receive the mentally ill of the former Haskovo District. It had 100 beds.
The hospital was opened in the building of the former Kardzhali prison. In order to turn the building, built for a prison, into a hospital, it was necessary to make a lot of efforts and overcome many difficulties: insufficient material base, unfinished repairs, lack of central heating, irregular water supply. The area is degraded, the road to the hospital is broken and on rainy days becomes impassable due to deep, sticky mud. There is no laboratory, no pharmacy, no medical equipment, no vehicles for consulting patients. There are not enough open positions, the staff is young and inexperienced. But there is a desire to work, ambition, will and perseverance. Intensive organizational, qualification and medical-diagnostic activity is being started. Courses are being organized for the rapid qualification of medical staff in psychiatry and care for the mentally ill.
