The hospital was established on July 1, 1958, and began outpatient and emergency operations in March 1959. It officially opened on November 1 of the same year. The land area is 30.356936 hectares, and the total floor area is 545,203.83 square meters. The main buildings include Zhongzheng Building, Siyuan Building, Changqing Building, Outpatient Building, Zhide Building, Neuroregeneration Center, Disability Center, Power Center, etc. Initially, there were 600 beds, and the medical services were limited to retired officers and soldiers in Taiwan. Later, it was opened to veterans, civil servants, laborers, farmers, fishermen and the general public. The first, second and third outpatient buildings were built one after another, and the number of outpatients increased from more than 200 people per day at the beginning to about 8,000 people per day at present; in response to the increase in outpatient volume, the number of beds was gradually expanded, and currently there are 3,160 beds (December 2014).
The hospital currently has 6,857 employees (1,367 doctors, 3,141 nurses, 1,025 medical staff, 338 technicians, 838 administrative staff, and 148 skilled workers. Gender ratio: 1,903 males, 27.8%; 4,954 females, 72.2%), 723 research assistants, 1,413 outsourced staff, and 790 volunteers, a total of 9,783 people, forming a strong medical team equipped with advanced medical equipment to accurately diagnose and treat various diseases for patients.
