Quality

The quality of maternal and newborn care is a critical aspect of healthcare. Let’s explore some relevant information:

  1. World Health Organization (WHO): The WHO has developed standards for improving quality of maternal and newborn care in health facilities. These standards cover areas such as clinical guidelines, effective interventions, and measures of quality of care. They aim to enhance the quality of services provided to pregnant women and newborns.

  2. National Maternity Review (England): Despite increasing birth rates and complexity of cases, the quality and outcomes of maternity services have significantly improved over the last decade. This review highlights positive developments in maternity care.

  3. Quality Assessment in Maternity Services (England): The Quality Working Group of the Maternity Review assessed existing service quality across safety, experience, and effectiveness domains. This assessment provides insights into the quality of maternity services.

  4. National Health Mission (India): India has made efforts to improve access to quality maternal and newborn health services, aiming to reduce preventable maternal, neonatal, and infant deaths. Achieving this goal involves addressing various aspects of care.

Remember that quality of care involves not only clinical standards but also safety, patient experience, and effectiveness.

Vision & Mission

The strategic direction and purpose of the National Maternity Hospital (NMH) in Ireland are outlined in the National Maternity Strategy 2016-2026, titled "Creating a Better Future Together." This strategy aims to ensure that maternity and neonatal care is safe, standardized, high-quality, and offers a better experience for women and their families. It emphasizes a woman-centered approach to care, recognizing childbirth as a natural process while providing specialized pathways for those with higher care needs. The strategy promotes integrated, team-based care across three pathways: Supported Care, Assisted Care, and Specialised Care.

The NMH's relocation to the St Vincent's University Hospital campus at Elm Park is a significant part of this strategy. The new NMH will provide state-of-the-art facilities designed to 21st-century healthcare standards, including single en-suite rooms, modern delivery rooms, and a neonatal intensive care unit. Co-locating the NMH with an adult acute hospital aims to improve patient outcomes by offering immediate access to a wide range of medical, surgical, and diagnostic services.

The strategic direction for the NMH also includes ensuring that all legally permissible services are available without any religious or external influence, safeguarding the State’s investment, and maintaining clinical and operational independence. The hospital's governance will involve a new company, NMH at Elm Park DAC, which will oversee the hospital’s operations independently but in close collaboration with St Vincent’s Healthcare Group.
