Tohoku University Hospital has contributed to the development of medical care in Japan for over 100 years. At the same time, as a key player in medical care in the Tohoku region, it has provided cutting-edge medical care and supported local medical care. The Tohoku region, which sustained great damage from the Great East Japan Earthquake on March 11, 2011, is facing an aging and depopulation problem, and there are a mountain of medical issues that must be resolved. As one of the first "clinical research core hospitals" to be certified in Japan, the hospital is actively conducting international-standard clinical research, drug discovery, and medical device development together with various companies, while taking advantage of its strengths as a comprehensive university.
