Dr Matthias Schmitt is an expert consultant cardiologist with over 25 years of experience based in Manchester. He possesses in-depth knowledge of a wide range of cardiovascular issues, while focusing principally on various heart diseases, including valvular and structural heart disease, hypertensive heart disease and coronary artery disease, as well as offering specialist services such as cardiac CT angiography (including Heartflow® analysis) and Cari-Heart® (peri-coronary fat attenuation analysis).

Dr Schmitt qualified with an MD from Johann-Wolfgang Goethe Universität (Goethe University), Frankfurt, Germany, in 1994. Following his graduation he undertook junior doctor positions in medicine at Katharinen-Krankenhaus, Frankfurt, cardiothoracic surgery at University Hospital, Freiburg and cardiology at City Hospital in Ludwigshafen before moving to the UK.

Upon his move to the UK, Dr Schmitt was awarded the prestigious BCS De Bono research fellowship and gained a PhD at the Wales Heart Research Institute in Cardiff. His phD research focused on applying radionuclide technologies to investigate the effects of natriuretic peptides on vascular tone in health and heart failure.
