Development of an automated electronic stethoscope for early detection of significant valvular heart disease, funded by £1.2 million from the Medical Research Council (MRC).
Investigating cardiac arrhythmias in patients with rare cardiomyopathies, using cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging (CMR), echocardiography, and biomarkers to develop a risk stratification tool to prevent major adverse cardiovascular events in Fabry disease, funded by £1 million from commercial sources.

Richard Steeds is a Consultant Cardiologist at University Hospitals Birmingham, specializing in the diagnosis, monitoring, and treatment of valvular heart disease and cardiomyopathy, including rare and metabolic diseases. He is Clinical Lead for Cardiovascular Imaging, incorporating multimodality approaches using echocardiography, magnetic resonance, and nuclear imaging. Professor Steeds is an Honorary Professor at the Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences, University of Birmingham, and has published more than 200 peer-reviewed research articles. He is currently using multiparametric CMR and echocardiography to investigate the role of myocardial infiltration in valvular heart disease and in cardiomyopathy related to rare diseases
