Professor Jemima Mellerio is a highly distinguished consultant dermatologist who completed her medical education at the London Hospital Medical College in Whitechapel, where she also earned a first-class BSc in Physiology. Following her postgraduate medical training in North and East London, she pursued specialised dermatology training at St John’s Institute of Dermatology and King’s College Hospital in London, joining the Specialist Register for Dermatology in 2002.
In 2003, she was appointed as a consultant at St John’s Institute of Dermatology within the Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, focusing on general adult and paediatric dermatology, with specialised clinics for adult epidermolysis bullosa (EB) and other genetic skin disorders. From 2003 to 2017, she served as the dermatologist for the Paediatric EB Service at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Foundation Trust. At St John’s, she has held several leadership roles: lead for the Adult EB Service since 2003, lead for Paediatric and Genetic Dermatology from 2006 to 2018, and chief of dermatology from 2018 to 2023.
She is on the Executive Committees of the British Association of Dermatologists and the British Society for Paediatric and Adolescent Dermatology. Professor Mellerio addresses a variety of dermatological issues in both adults and children, including acne, eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, vitiligo, birthmarks, and hair disorders. She also performs mole checks and treats sun damage and skin cancers. An internationally recognised expert in diagnosing and managing genetic skin diseases such as EB, ichthyosis, ectodermal dysplasia, and related conditions, Professor Mellerio is highly regarded in her field.
